Out with the old, in with the new

As 2022 comes to a close, we are all looking ahead to 2023. There always seems to be a magical excitement surrounding a New Year. It’s a wonderful time to freshen up aspects of our

lives, including the homes in which we live. Life coaches and organization experts like to say, “Outer order, inner calm.” Think about it. Whenever a room in your house is completely clean and situated exactly as you desire, it’s much easier to relax and unwind in that space. The great thing is you don’t have to get super fancy or study feng shui to make this a reality. Below are several tips to help you create a space you love and to lean into this upcoming year with anticipation.

Focus on renewal: Spirituality doesn’t have to equate to church or worship. In fact, the definition of spirituality is being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. Since we reside in our homes more than in any other space, we need to ensure they feel peaceful and offer a sense of rejuvenation and renewal. Our home should be our happy place, somewhere that helps us feel grounded and prepared to go out into the world. Keep this in mind as you consider the remaining suggestions.

Clear out the clutter: This one is non negotiable. You simply cannot feel grounded or at ease if there is clutter everywhere. A direct link between excess clutter and high stress levels has been shown in numerous studies. Further, when you live in a cluttered home, there is a constant feeling of guilt even if you’re not consciously aware of it. It’s emotionally hard for some people to part with belongings, but it’s necessary to feel empowered and calm in your own home. A few tips to eliminate clutter, even if it’s emotionally draining, are to buy less items to begin with, eliminate non-essential belongings, use smart storage solutions, and take a few minutes each day to maintain clean spaces.

Design a welcoming entry: This is a great way to uplevel the look and feel of your home. Create a welcoming foyer or entryway to ensure guests feel comfortable. This is also beneficial for the folks living in the home because as you step over the threshold, you immediately feel a sense of relaxation. To do this, declutter this space. While you may want to include a table or some other space to drop keys or other small items, be sure to clean off this space routinely. Other entryway accents should include soft lighting, rugs, color, mirrors, and something that makes it feel personal.

Bring the outside in: Another wonderful way to make your home feel peaceful and like a place of renewal is to bring the outside in. An obvious way to do this is to use a variety of plants to decorate each room. Using natural materials like wood and bamboo also offers a feeling of relaxation. Having an indoor herb garden is an additional way to bring some nature into your house. This will offer lovely natural scents and provide you with plenty of herbs to use in the kitchen.
